چکیده
An overview of some results from our own studies on speechreading is presented. Focus is on paralinguistic cues that assist in perception of the spoken signal. We elaborate on how the contextual, and especially the emotional cues are utilised in speechreading. We further discuss which skills are important in integrating paralinguistic cues and the linguistic signal in speechreading. As a basis for this overview, empirical data as well as hypotheses under scrutiny in a present design are discussed. Finally, some practical implications regarding synthetic faces as communicative aids are discussed: how the speech should be presented, incorporation of paralinguistic cues into the design, and how to match user and aid.

Automatic analysis of vocal manifestations of apparent mood or affect
Skilled clinicians are able to integrate linguistic, paralinguistic, and non-linguistic cues in the assessment of mood disorders. This project identified durationand amplitude-based aspects of the speech signal that can be measured automatically by computer and which provide paralinguistic information about the apparent affect of a speech sample. A group of 40 experimental subjects produced 158...
متن کاملEvaluation of A Visual-FM System To Enhance Speechreading
An experiment was conducted to investigate the potential benefits of a visual-FM system for speechreading. Two speakers took part in the study. They were recorded while they spoke 36 sentences at a distance of 1.83, 3.66, and 7.32 m from a stationary Hi8 video camera. Under each experimental condition, the signal available from the camera of a visual-FM system was recorded simultaneously. A spe...
متن کاملAutomatic speech recognition to aid the hearing impaired: prospects for the automatic generation of cued speech.
Although great strides have been made in the development of automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems, the communication performance achievable with the output of current real-time speech recognition systems would be extremely poor relative to normal speech reception. An alternate application of ASR technology to aid the hearing impaired would derive cues from the acoustical speech signal that...
متن کاملReal-life emotions detectio paralinguistic cues on Human-H
The emotion detection work reported here is part of a larger study aiming to model user behavior in real interactions. We already studied emotions in a real-life corpus with human-human dialogs on a financial task. We now make use of another corpus of real agent-caller spoken dialogs from a medical emergency call center in which emotion manifestations are much more complex, and extreme emotions...
متن کاملSpectro-temporal interactions in auditory and auditory-visual speech processing
Speech recognition often involves the face-to-face communication between two or more individuals. The combined influences of auditory and visual speech information leads to a remarkably robust signal that is greatly resistant to noise, reverberation, hearing loss, and other forms of signal distortion. Studies of auditory-visual speech processing have revealed that speechreading interacts with a...
